At iConnectivity we make a lot of interfaces, and each one has a huge amount of functionality. So it's sometimes easy to get confused as to what features each individual interface offers.
Port Types
There are 5 main connection types on iConnectivity interfaces
1) DIN MIDI - These are your standard 5 PIN DIN MIDI connections. This has been a standard connection type since the beginning. This will help connect your non USB class compliant gear and older MIDI devices which might not have a USB port.
You can learn more about DIN MIDI - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIN_connector
2) USB Host / USB MIDI (HST) - This is a USB-A port type. This port has 2 main guidelines
- Should be USB class compliant.
- Will only pass MIDI & SysEx data
You can connect a powered USB hub to a USB host to increase the amount of MIDI controllers to the host port(s).
Each iConnectivity interface will have a maximum number of MIDI controllers that can connect to the USB host port(s).
Each iConnectivity interface will allow a certain amount of power from the USB host port(s). This amount is usually 500mA per port. Interfaces with multiple host ports will have a maximum amount in total.
Max Current (per port) Total Current (per unit)
mioXM 500 mA 2000 mA (2A)
mioXL 500 mA 3000 mA (3A)
3) USB DAW (Previous labelled Device Jack)- This is a USB-B or USB-C port type. This port is used to connect computing devices to iConnectivity interfaces. There are many computing devices that can connect to the USB DAW (Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, etc..).
The USB DAW port has a maximum of 16 MIDI ports. Each MIDI port has 16 channels of MIDI. Some iConnectivity interfaces will have multiple USB DAW ports. These will be label as by [jack #] in the Auracle X software.
4) RTP (MIDI)/ Network - An RJ-45 / Ethernet port type. This port can be used to connect directly from one interface to another, or one interface to a computer directly. They can also connect to a network switch, or router (wired/wireless) to connect to a bigger network situation.
** You can find out more about this in our Knowledge Base
5) Control Port(s) - A 1/4" sized jack. Theis port type can be found on the PlayAUDIO series.
To find more info on how to use these ports and what they are able to do, please check the manual for the specific product and our other article in our knowledge base.
